The European Union

The EU's external action is studies comprehensively in the programme. The key topics cover the European External Action Service and EU's external representation, Common Foreign and Security Policy and Common Security and Defence Policy, neighbourhood policy and energy security. The nexus of external and internal security is addressed in programme by focusing on terrorism and radicalization. The regional scope of the programme covers EU's eastern and southern neighbourhood, and it also covers EU-Turkey relations and EU's Arctic policy.
The EU's institutional development and decision-making are studied broadly both in their own right and in relation to the Union's external action. Key topics include decision-making in the post-Lisbon Treaty institutional environment, EMU reforms, differentiated integration and rise of Euroscepticism. In addition, the programme focuses on trends in the member states EU policies.
EU research within the Institute is not confined to the EU programme, however. Research on the EU's climate policy, relations with Russia, and transatlantic relations may be conducted within, or in cooperation with, other FIIA research programmes.
The European Union research programme aims to support decision-making and to serve the wider public. The programme takes part in major European research networks and continues to expand and reinforce this cooperation.
