A Chinese road to disaster through the Serengeti?

The Tanzanian government has made plans to build a two-lane road through the Serengeti National Park to provide access to the coast for those in remote regions. Construction due to start in 2012 but there are claims that the road will spell disaster for the entire Serengeti ecosystem. At the same time, China is being painted as a culprit for allegedly offering funding the project. Is China implicated or an easy target?

Of black swans, wetlands, nuclear power and worst-case scenarios

The oil spill that has hit the U.S. coast and further threatens large swathes of the coast from Louisiana to Florida is a tragic accident, with extensive social, environmental and economic consequences. The event is a Black Swan and holds a precious lesson for Finland, as it makes decisions on nuclear power and finalizes demands that it will place on the potential nuclear power firms.

The Arctic coastal states meet in Ottawa – again

The five Arctic coastal states gathered in an Arctic Summit on March 29th in Ottawa, Canada. The meeting was arranged despite previous affirmations not to leave out Finland, Sweden and Iceland and the Arctic indigenous peoples, as was done in Ilulissat in 2008.
