Populism in European Politics: On the rise or past its peak?

invitation only · At the Auditorium of the Parliament Annex Building Arkadiankatu 3, Helsinki · 06.10.2017 10:30 - 12:30

invitation only

The success of populist politics has been making headlines for several years, but recent developments question its current appeal. On the one hand, right-wing populists have consolidated their position in several East-Central European countries, and even gained power in the United States. On the other hand, they have failed to overturn the political scenario in the recent Dutch, French and German elections. This seminar explores current prospects for populist politics, with a focus on Europe. What are the driving factors of its popularity and what has constrained its appeal in the different national contexts? Can we generalise about ‘populism’ across Europe, or does the term hide complex and different political movements? What are the specific features of Nordic populism? Does populism undermine the democratic debate, or can it contribute to reviving it?
