The EU is considered to be one of the key actors in fostering sustainable economic, social and environmental development globally, with the primary aim of eradicating poverty in the world. The Lisbon Treaty re-stated the importance of this task for the EU and anchored its development policy into the forefront of the EU’s external relations. In doing so, it also underlined the need for coherence between the EU’s development and trade policies as well as the Common Foreign and Security Policy. Nearly two years after the Lisbon reform, it is a appropriate to reflect upon how the institutional framework of the EU’s development policy has changed, and what kind of political challenges still lie ahead?
