Transatlantic Trends 2022: Transatlantic Public Opinion on Global Order, Transatlantic Security, and Democracy

The Transatlantic Trends is GMF’s annual flagship public opinion study on global order, security and defense, transatlantic relations, as well as strategic challenges like China and Russia. The 2022 edition of the study was conducted in 14 countries (11 countries in Europe, plus the US, Canada, Turkey) in June/July 2022, and sheds a light, among other things, on the perception of the influence of major players in geopolitics, NATO’s and the EU’s respective roles in European security, the approach publics would like their governments to take approach with Ukraine and China, the reliability of partners within the transatlantic relationship, and the state of democracy.

Martin Quencez

Research Fellow and Director of the Paris office of the German Marshall Fund of the United States

Martin Quencez currently serves as the deputy director of GMF’s Paris office and a research fellow in the Security & Defense program. His work includes research on transatlantic security and defense cooperation and U.S. and French foreign policy, on which he regularly writes articles for the French and international press. He leads different research projects on European defense cooperation and transatlantic defense innovation. Quencez is also an associate researcher for the European Council on Foreign Relations, working in France for its European Powers program. He taught transatlantic relations at the Euro-American campus of Sciences-Po. Prior to joining GMF, he worked for the Institute of Defense Studies and Analyses in New Delhi, where he focused on French and Indian strategic thinking. He studied international relations at the Uppsala University in Sweden and is a graduate of Sciences-Po Paris. He is currently doing a PhD in contemporary history at the Sorbonne Nouvelle University.

Bruce Stokes

Visiting Senior Fellow, German Marshall Fund of the United States

Bruce Stokes is the executive director of the Transatlantic Task Force: Together or Alone? Choices and Strategies for Transatlantic Relations for 2021 and Beyond. Previously, he was the director of Global Economic Attitudes at the Pew Research Center in Washington, DC, and is a former international economics columnist for the National Journal, a Washington based public policy magazine. He is also a former senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. From 2010-2012 Stokes was a senior fellow at the German Marshall Fund. He was the author of the 2009 Transatlantic Trends survey, and two task force reports: The Case for Renewing Transatlantic Capitalism, and A New Era for Transatlantic Trade Leadership. In 1987 and again in 1989, Stokes was a Japan Society Fellow, living in and reporting from Japan. In 1997, he was a member of President Clinton's Commission on United States-Pacific Trade and Investment Policy and he wrote its final report, "Building American Prosperity in the 21st Century." He is co-author of the book America Against the World: How We Are Different and Why We Are Disliked (Times Books, 2006), and co-author of numerous Pew Global Attitudes Surveys. In 2006, Stokes was honored by the Coalition of Service Industries for his reporting on services issues. In 2004, he was chosen by International Economy magazine as one of the most influential China watchers in the U.S. press. In 1995, he was picked by Washingtonian Magazine as one of the "Best on Business" reporters in Washington. In 1989, Stokes won the coveted John Hancock award for excellence in business and economics reporting for his series on the impact of the rising yen on the Japanese economy.

Iro Särkkä

Postdoctoral Fellow, FIIA

Iro Särkkä is a Postdoctoral Fellow at FIIA. She is a political scientist and foreign and security policy expert on Finland and NATO. Her areas of expertise include foreign policy analysis, Nordic, European and global security, multilateral co-operation and questions of political behaviour. Särkkä holds both a PhD and a Master’s degree in political science from University of Helsinki, and is also a graduate from University College London (UCL), UK and Science Po Lille in France. In her doctoral thesis “Rhetoric of NATO in Finland’s Security Policy Debate” (2019) she focused on studying changes in Finland’s security policy and NATO during the post-Cold war period. More recently, her research interests have included studying and conceptualizing national identity change in small states as well as securitization theories. Särkkä has previously worked as a Senior Advisor at the University of Helsinki and as a Researcher and Special Adviser in the Finnish Defence Forces. At present, she also actively engages in public debate on Finland, NATO and global security.

Rachel Tausendfreund

Visiting Senior Fellow, FIIA

Rachel Tausendfreund is a Visiting Senior Fellow at CUSPP for the autumn of 2022. She is the editorial director at GMF, overseeing the organization’s research output and publication planning. Before joining GMF, Rachel Tausendfreund was editorial director at the European Council on Foreign Relations and editor at the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP). At the DGAP, she was a member of the editorial team of the bimonthly foreign policy magazine Internationale Politik and ran IP-Journal, an online magazine covering German and European foreign policy. She has researched and published on issues relating to German, American, and transatlantic politics, as well as international trade policy and European foreign policy.
