The Armenian genocide occurred when 1.5 million Armenians living in Turkey were eliminated from their historic homeland through forced deportations and massacres between 1915-1918. The April 24th is considered as the starting date of the persecution and this year marks the 100th anniversary of it. The term ‘genocide’ is problematic, and e.g. Finland hasn’t recognized the Armenian killings as a genocide. Senior Research Fellow at the Institute Toni Alaranta visited Yle Ajankohtainen radio and was interviewed about the topic on April 23rd.
