The EU's Choice: Perspectives on deepening and differentiation

Auditorium of Economicum; Arkadiankatu 7, 2nd floor, Helsinki · 19.06.2017 14:00 - 16:00

In recent years, European public debate has been rife with speculations about the possible collapse of the European Union. The Brexit vote, the migration crisis, the rise of populist and Eurosceptic parties, uncertainties about the Eurozone, and continuing geopolitical tensions with Russia have thrown the EU into one of the most difficult periods in its history. At the same time, the crises have given an impetus to reforms in several policy fields. Can the EU emerge from these crises as a viable political entity and functioning system of governance? What are the prospects of further deepening, differentiation and disintegration?

The seminar is held in conjunction with the publishing of FIIA Report The EU’s choice: Perspectives on deepening and differentiation. The report is a part of a larger research project at FIIA entitled Finland and the Tightening Competition in Global Politics. The project is funded by the Government’s analysis, assessment and research activities.
