Noora Kotilainen: The images of the war in social media

Visiting Research Fellow Noora Kotilainen wrote an article that was published in the journal Rauhan Puolesta 6/2014. The article is based on her doctoral dissertation. Kotilainen analyzes the pictures taken of war or other crisis areas by ordinary people, and their distribution in the social media. The pictures are said to be revolutionary: they show a different point of view to the crisis and wars to people living in safe ares, e.g. the Western people. But is the matter really so straightforward?
