Open positions for postdoctoral or Master’s degree researchers in FIIA’s EU research programme

The Finnish Institute of International Affairs is a research institute whose mission is to produce high quality, topical information on international relations and the EU. The Institute realizes its aims by conducting research as well as by organizing domestic and international seminars and publishing reports on its research and current international issues

FIIA is recruiting two (2) Research Fellows in its European Union research programme. Based on the profiles of the applicants, we retain the right to determine which set of skills/ expertise is seen as most valuable for FIIA. We will consider applications in three thematic areas that will complement our current fields of expertise:

(i) EU’s relations with the Middle East and (North) Africa;
(ii) EU’s policies to counter terrorism and radicalisation; and
(iii) EU institutions and decision-making

Role description:

The appointments will take effect in November 2020 at the earliest, and will run until the end of 2022 in line with the completion of the current three-year programme period.  With regard to the theme related to EU relations with the Middle East and (North) Africa, the successful candidate will have an excellent knowledge of the Middle East and/or the broader Mediterranean region and/or Africa. We particularly appreciate sound expertise in the EU’s relations and policies towards these regions.

With regard to the theme related to EU’s policies to counter terrorism and radicalisation, the successful candidate will have an excellent knowledge on terrorism, radicalisation and/or political violence. We particularly appreciate sound expertise in the EU’s policies to counter terrorism.  

With regard to the theme on EU institutions and decision-making, the successful candidate will have in-depth knowledge of the EU institutions and decision-making. We particularly appreciate expertise related to Economic and Monetary Union.

Key requirements:

The applicant should hold a Doctoral or a Master’s degree and should have demonstrated her/his competence through previous academic and public activities. The FIIA accepts educational qualifications and relevant working experience acquired in Finland or abroad. Excellent communication and teamwork skills as well as the availability to travel abroad will be highly valued, as the tasks include participation in international network meetings.

The application should be written in English and include a cover letter, CV, publication list and a research plan comprising a maximum of five (5) pages. The research proposal should outline the research intended to be undertaken during the appointment period. It should introduce the key themes and research questions, theories and methods to be employed, the timetable, as well as dissemination and networking strategies. Ongoing and planned research collaboration/projects should also be mentioned.
